History of Takdah Tea Estate

Takdah name is derived from a local ethnic Lepcha language meaning ” The Place of Tigers” Probably this place was where tigers roamed freely and hence the name, as not much information is available on record as to why it was named so.

This heritage tea estate was established in the year 1864 and boasts to be one among those early tea gardens of Darjeeling. The garden is presently owned by the Chamong group.

 

 

Location and Elevation of Takdah Tea Estate

Takdah Tea Estate is located in the Kalimpong district at the the Teesta Valley covering an area of 288 hectares of cultivable land at an altitude of 2500 feet to 6500 feet from the sea level. This tea estate may be reached from Darjeeling which is at distance of 27 kilometer.

 

 

Darjeeling Teas of Takdah Tea Estate

This tea garden from Darjeeling produces three main crops apart from the monsoon crop. The teas of first flush and second flush are much in demand around the world. Most of its teas are exported to the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, and Middle East.

The garden is certified as Bio – Organic by esteemed organisations like HACCP and others.

 

 

Ownership of Takdah Tea Esate

This tea garden is presently owned by the Chamong group which also owns sixteen other tea gardens of Darjeeling and 4 tea gardens in Assam, collectively making it the largest producer of organic Darjeeling and Assam teas. The most popular tea gardens are Chamong, Pussimbing, Lingia, Tumsong, Sri Dwarika, Soom, Nagri, Dhajea, Marybong, Bannockburn, Phoobshering, and Ging.
